Young and Lazy - Long Beach

Young and Lazy

We hit this place up a couple hours right after Sushi On Fire. It's another sushi joint. I've been here before and I ordered a custom salmon teriyaki bowl because they didn't have it on the menu, and I didn't like it. It was way too small. The taste was forgetful.

For some reason, I felt like more salmon sushi, so we went here. They have a mix sushi combo. I asked for 6 pieces salmon and two pieces tuna for $8.50. You definitely get what you pay for. I'm no sushi critic, but I noticed that this wasn't quality sushi. It was okay for me, but my girl didn't like it. I didn't like the tuna though. The salmon was really lacking in color.

8 piece sushi deal

This place has other sushi and a few other rolls. My two experiences here haven't been great, so I'm not gonna be going back here. You can test your luck with the rolls if you want, but you better hurry. I think this place might go out of business already and I think it's only about a year old. Every time I come here, there's no other customers. The place is super quiet inside. I feel bad for them. The lady at the counter was nice. I hope they do something to turn the business around. They should start with the taste of their food first in my opinion.

I can't believe I haven't posted a review for this place yet. Hole Mole is one of the spots to go to for cheap Mexican food. There's like 2 or 3 in Long Beach alone. The one on PCH is in the same plaza as 7-11.

I love this place mostly cuz of the prices. I guess they're supposed to be known for their fish tacos. They have $0.99 fish tacos on Tuesdays. I usually get the breakfast quesadillas which cost less than 2 or 3 dollars, and that should get you full enough. You might not even finish it.

Last time I went, I got the fish burrito ($3.85) and my girlfriend got the vegi breakfast burrito ($3.65). They were both good.

Burrito (I forgot which one)

I've been here so many times and will go here again if I'm in town. Check this place out.

Fusion Sushi, Long Beach

Fusion Sushi

Type: Japanese food / sushi

I'm guessing this place is pretty new because I had a hard time finding the info for this place on the internet. I found out about Fusion Sushi in Long Beach's local magazine "District." I love that magazine cuz it's free and they always have coupons for the local restaurants. Anyways, they had a small ad in there that said something like "L.A. Times voted it best sushi in the city." They had a coupon for a free appetizer if you order $30 or more. When my girlfriend and I get sushi, we always end up spending more than $30 for sure, so we had to utilize that coupon.

Let's see now.... I'm trying to remember what was good and what was okay. I know the miso soup was good. I liked the salad. Oh yeah, one main thing I remember is that their baked lobster rolls are real good and the price for it was one of the cheapest I've seen. I'll go back just for those! Their dynamite appetizer was "ehh." It's full of vegetables and it just wasn't what I was expecting. I wouldn't order it again.

"Ehh" Dynamite... at least it was free

We also got the rainbow roll and I forgot what that one other roll was. I think it was expensive and it wasn't that great. The rainbow was okay.

Rainbow roll and some expensive roll I wouldn't get again

good salad and good miso soup

I forgot that we ordered some actual sushi. I liked it, but my girlfriend told me later that it didn't seem fresh. I don't know nothin about that.

Baked lobster roll and sushi

Even though it wasn't the best-- or even top 5 sushi/roll meals I've had, I'd definitely go back to Fusion Sushi. They have so many other things to try. If you can't decide what to get, just get an order or two of the baked lobster rolls.

Chronic Tacos is a fairly new company, with many locations around So Cal. Their original one is in Newport Beach. The one we went to in Long Beach is on Bellflower and Stearns in the same plaza as Rite Aid, Trader Joe's, and Target.

The place has a fun and casual atmosphere with extreme sports videos playing on the tv. It's a pretty popular place and it was fairly busy when we went there at night. Ordering your food is kind of like the Subway style where you watch them prepare it in front of your face and they ask what ingredients you want on your meal.

I ordered the shrimp burrito (beer battered). That cost about $7. I really liked it. I just wish it was bigger... of course. Everything in it was tasty and I didn't want it to end.

wish-it-was-bigger shrimp burrito

My girlfriend ordered the breaded fish tacos. I think that was good too. I forgot how it compared to Senor Baja's fish tacos though. I think it was up there. The fish tacos were a little pricey as well at about $3.50.

up-there fish taco

I wouldn't mind going to Chronic Tacos again even though it's a little expensive. My girlfriend and I noticed when we compared this place to the Hole Mole on PCH, this place has superior ingredients. I'm not totally dissing Hole Mole cuz I love that place for its great prices, but Chronic Tacos just seems fresher and a bit better tasting.

Honduras Kitchen is located near Cherry Ave. on 4th St. in Long Beach. They have another location in Huntington Park. I don't remember seeing any parking lot for them, so you have to park on the street somewhere. The small street right next to them seems ghetto, so just be careful there. Actually, the whole area that surrounds the restaurant seems ghetto. If you are interested in coming here, make sure to bring cash because they don't take cards and I don't know if you want to walk to the nearby liquor store to get cash from their ATM.

Honduran food seems pretty similar to Mexican and Salvadoran food. I'm sure they have their differences, but I didn't see much. The prices here were I guess average or a little above average. We usually order the seafood dishes, so those are one of the most expensive. I believe the seafood dishes averaged about $10-$12 in price.

When we got there, the place was empty because the lady forgot to unlock the door and we had to call her to unlock it! We were the only ones eating there in that big place for a while. They hold night clubs there on some nights, so I think we were eating where the dance floor was supposed to be.

In the beginning after ordering our food, we got some chips with some cheese and red sauce on top. I really liked it. The sauce had a subtle taste and the cheese was tasty. I should have asked for more sauce but there were almost no chips left anyway.

Chips w/ cheese and some kinda red sauce

So we finally get our orders. My girlfriend ordered the fish with garlic sauce I think. She got it with the green plantains. Note: Don't order the green plantains unless you like banana chips with your meals. I prefer the yellow plantains-- which they also have-- which is what most caribbean places serve. The fish was bland so I wouldn't order that for myself. The sides were very good, but if you look at the pictures, they don't give you a lot of rice. I'm not on the Atkins Diet man!

Bland fish w/ garlic sauce and green plantains... no thanks

I ordered the fried shrimp which is cooked with batter. I really liked the shrimp, but as you can see, they didn't hook it up at all. How the hell am I supposed to be satisfied with 5 or 6 bites of shrimp? They really need to do something about some of their portions. But all that aside, I loved my dish because I got the yellow plantains and I finished the sides too. The salad and that purple stuff compliments the shrimp, rice, and plantains very nicely. It adds some juice to it. The only reason why I wouldn't order this is cuz of the weak portions.

skimped on the shrimp... but bom-b-z!

Would I go here again? Hmmm... I've thought about that for a little. Maybe. I need cash for sure. I need to bring my shitty van so I can park in the ghetto. I need to be fiending for plantains. I can't be too hungry. I need to bring my own rice (I wish). It's possible I might come here again. I mean it's possible for me to win the lotto.... well no, it wasn't that bad.

The only reason why we went to this place is because my girlfriend has the same name as the lady the place is named after. Mimi Thai Cuisine is located on Pacific Ave., but it used to be on Atlantic, so don't get lost.

The place wasn't packed when we got there, but I think it was a little later at night. We ordered the crab fried rice as usual and some fish with some sweet and sour sauce if I can recall. So the crab fried rice came and I took my first few bites. It seemed a little hard. I took more bites and I still thought something wasn't right. I finally brought it up to my girlfriend and she took her test bites and she also came up with the same results. After some quick consulting, we came to the conclusion that the rice was under-cooked. I don't know about you, but when the rice isn't right, it could make the whole meal bad. We told the lady that we thought the rice seemed under-cooked, and she said it's supposed to be like that. We think she just didn't really understand us. I'm Filipino, so I think I have some authority on rice quality, and I say that shit was under-cooked dammit.

The partly cooked crab fried rice.

The fish was whatevers to me. It wasn't as fried as I would have liked. My girlfriend liked it. The prices were about average for most Thai places I've been to. I'm estimating the total came to $22 something with tip included. I'm sure their rice isn't always like that, but my experience here won't bring me back. Sorry Mimi.

Some fried fish with sauce and veggies-- maybe pompano?

Quick and Fresh huh? Not really. We went to Mitaki cuz we saw the prices for the special rolls were decent. It's located kind of near the Wal-Mart in Downtown Long Beach.

This place has decent food. The rolls were cool, and the combination tasted okay. The only thing bad was the portion of the combination. If you look at the picture, the scoop of rice sucks, and the fish was pretty small itself. For the price I paid, I would rather get a combo at L&L Hawaiian BBQ.

Combo

I didn't think the rolls were too bad. Next time I come here, I'll just get rolls. Again, I forgot which rolls we got, and I also forgot which one we didn't like too much. I think the one with the rice below the salmon roll was the one we weren't feeling.

My girl wasn't too impressed with this place. I'd go here again for the rolls. But there's just so many other sushi places in Long Beach that I don't know if I'll ever get another chance to eat here.

Pete's At the Beach is located in the same plaza as Ralph's, Niko Niko, and Longs Drugs. I've seen it for a while, but never actually went inside. We couldn't think of any other spot to eat at, so we finally decided on this place. They have two separate rooms-- one is mainly for dining, and the other room (which we ate in) has a bunch of TVs and a bar. I don't know if this place gets crowded, but it would be a big waste of space and TVs cuz the place is surprisingly big.

It was around morning time when we went, so I had to get me some huevos rancheros. I wasn't feeling it at all. It was one of the not-so-good huevos rancheros I've tried. My girlfriend makes these the best, so maybe I should stop ordering it!

Not-So-Good Huevos Rancheros

My girl ordered some crab dish with poached eggs or eggs benedict on top. The menu said "lobster" but our waitress told us it's crab-- so don't be fooled. This dish was good, but like many meals that are tasty-- my one complaint was that it was just too small.

some crab sandwich

Overall, Pete's was okay for a first impression. The prices are a little pricier than Denny's, Carrow's, and such. But I think it's also a little better. I'll go here again if I can't think of any other place to eat.

Your House is another restaurant like Baiplu-- thai and japanese fusion. They serve Thai dishes as well as Japanese dishes (mostly sushi). I don't know if they're the same owners, but they have somewhat different menus and happy hours. Your House has their happy hour from like 3pm-7pm or 4pm-7pm. They have a select number of rolls for $6.

I've been here twice and I know that I didn't like too many of their happy hour rolls. The one we liked was the.... I forgot what it was called. I know I'm useless, but it's been a while. I'll take notes next time.

The one on top is the one we liked. The colorful one below is the rainbow roll which we didn't like too much.

Again... the one with green is the good one, the other one was whatever.

Catfish w/ chili sauce

So would I go here again? Yeah, sure. Why not. Would I be excited to go? If I hadn't eaten all day, maybe. I guess cuz I was being cheap and only tried the happy hour rolls that I'm not too excited about the place. Let me know if their other stuff is good!

When I think of crepes, I think of boba, Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, and baggy pants. What the hell do they have in common you ask? To me, they're trendy things that kind of sprang up out of nowhere. Some have withstood the test of time, while others have been donated to Goodwill. I barely heard of crepes maybe about 2 years ago, and I first tried them maybe about year ago. Yeah I know, call me a late bloomer. Everybody was talking about "crepes this," "crepes that." Shut up already! You're giving me the crepes................ *tap* *tap* *tap* is this thing on?

Anyways, I've been to La Creperie twice (I never said I wasn't trendy). Both those times we ordered the calamari. The sauce it comes with is bomb, and I'll order the calamari again.

Calamari with bomb sauce

I got the breakfast crepes. I think it was the Mexican or Spanish style crepes. That one was pretty good. I took it to go cuz I had a job interview right after. Mimi got the crepes with shrimp. That one is also good. The prices aren't too expensive that I could remember. I think the total might have come to less than $20.

Mexican or Spanish style breakfast crepes

Obviously I'll go back here. I'll try other crepes places too in the future... right before I get some boba thai iced tea with a dozen glazed donuts.

I don't want to say too much bad stuff about this place so that you'll never try it, but I'll never go back here if I have a choice. I read that this place has a regular clientele and it gets packed on Friday nights.

The only reason we went to Mink Quan was we couldn't find another Thai place, and we were driving on a section of Anaheim St. where there's so many Thai places to choose from. We got there just before they were closing the kitchen so we had to hurry and order. We got the crab fried rice and the pad see ew. I would've ordered some kind of fish dish, but they didn't have any that I remember. Their menu is pretty limited. The only good thing about the crab fried rice was the portion. As you can see in the picture, its a pretty good sized hill.... oh wait, I took that pic after a few bites. But it was good-sized.

Crab Fried Rice

The pad see ew (if that's how you spell it) was bland. I had to try putting that chili fish sauce on it just to give it some taste-- but it didn't really work well.

Pad See Ew

So yeah. There you have it. Not a satisfied customer. Maybe it was because we came in late and the cooks just wanted to get it done... come to think of it, the food came really really fast. The only way I'll go here again is if somebody's treating :) . There's plenty of other Thai restaurants in the sea of Long Beach, so I'll keep swimming.

(Jim) Star of Siam received a lot of great reviews from the people of the internet. Am I gonna be one of them? ...Kinda.

Let me start off with the not so good findings about this place. Don't worry, there's not that much. First, the prices aren't expensive, but I've seen cheaper at many other places. That one's not such a big deal. It was maybe a dollar average more for most of their stuff. The biggest thing I didn't like about this place was the portions. The Vegetable Thai Fried Rice was gone so quick between two people. We had to order more steamed rice. The entree we got wasn't so big either. For $12.95, I would hope it fills you up so you don't have to order other things. That's pretty much all the gripes I have about the place.

Vegetable Fried Rice

The best part was the fish. We ordered the Siam Apple Trout. "Trout fillet (lightly breaded) served with a wonderful green apple salsa with lime juice, green chili, garlic, palm sugar, dried shrimp and cilantro. An adventure!," were the words of the Star of Siam website. Damn that was bomb! The outside of the fish was so crispy. I don't remember there being too many bones, but I think there were some you had to watch out for. The salsa was the one that made the dish so good. All you had to do was take a spoonful of it and pour it over the fish; eat it with rice; and say "mmm..."

Siam Apple Trout

Next time I come here, I'm not ordering no fried rice. I probably won't even risk the noodle dishes, cuz I'll end up having to order something else to make me full (I eat a lot remember). It's just fish entrees and steamed rice for me over here. Thank you.

"Bouchees..." is that French? Well, whatever it is, it's pretty bomb. I didn't wanna go here at first, cuz I thought it was just gonna be like any other sandwich place. But, since I was hungry from work, I decided to give it a shot.

This place is located in Downtown Long Beach on Long Beach Blvd., but you have to find meter parking or park in the structures near Wal-Mart. I don't know if they validate, so you take that risk if you want.

Bouchees is I guess what you call a modern kind of place. I don't really care about that too much. What I care about is the food and the prices. Bouchees serves salads, sandwiches, burgers, soups, and appetizers. What's kinda cool about this place is that you can order mini versions of the sandwiches and burgers if: a) you're on a diet. b) you have the appetite of an infant. or c) you want to try other burgers/sandwiches. I myself would fit into the "c" category.

I didn't order the minis yet, but Mimi (my girlfriend) did. I got the organic vegetable burger-- regular-sized. That cost about $6.00. Although expensive, I would order it again. Another down-side to that is that it doesn't come with fries. I also got the crab minestrone. That was good. I would definitely order that again. Mimi got mini crab cake sandwich and the mini ahi tuna sandwich which you can customize yourself. Both of those were good. We also got the herb parmesan fries.... bomb. One thing to remember whenever you eat here is, you should try the homemade ketchup. I'm a ranch guy, but this ketchup was waaay better than anything else.

I don't know if everybody would like this place. It's a little yuppie-ish, the prices aren't that cheap, and the menu is pretty limited. I don't care. I'm going here again fo sho. Au revoir.

I gotta thank this place for introducing me to Indian food. Actually, the first time I had Taste of India is the one in Fountain Valley on Warner and Magnolia. I'm not exactly sure if they're the same company, but they seem pretty much the same.

Taste of India is a fast food Indian joint serving their food like the fast food Chinese restaurants do-- I can't think of the name of that style right now (if there is a name). They usually have about 8 to 10 different entrees you can choose from that are ready-made. I think you can choose other stuff that's cooked to order. I like this place because they have a good amount of vegetarian dishes. My favorite is the creamed spinach "aloo saag" which I always order when I go there. You can order the entrees in combinations with some basmati rice, naan, and a saldad, or by themselves. The price for a 3 item combo is about $7-8.

I like the Taste of India in Long Beach cuz they're not shiesty with their portions. The Mexican girl serving you the food usually hooks it up, and the other workers there are cool too. I haven't been going here lately because when we eat Indian, it's usually at Natraj or some all-you-can-eat buffet, but I definitely wouldn't mind going here again.
