Local Sushi Hopping: Part 2 (click here for Part 1)

After some good rolls and a little less decent sushi at Denno, my girl and I went straight down Grand Ave. to Walnut where another sushi restaurant was situated. Originally, we wanted to try Jubei and see if it would redeem itself from our last visit, but they were closed. So Akasaka it was...

My girl loves the stuffed tomato sushi that some chefs prepare. It's usually raw scallops with some crab meat and sauce wrapped around with raw tuna or salmon. What do you know? Akasaka had stuffed tomatoes on their menu for a $15 dent on your bank account. This one was wrapped with salmon. I don't know how much most sushi places charge for their stuffed tomatoes, but that's a grip for 2 small pieces. I'm complaining about it mostly because it was the worst stuffed tomato I've had ever. It was super plain. There was no crab meat to give it some flavor. The salmon was kind of lacking in taste. The only way I'll get that again is if they charge $5 at the most for both pieces.

the worst (blandest) stuffed tomato we've had

Salmon being my favorite sushi, we ordered the 5 piece salmon sashimi ($8.95). At first I thought it was cool, but after a while it kind of just tasted like water. It was the same story as the stuffed tomato.

water sashimi

We decided to cut our losses and keep the money we had left. I don't know if it was an off day for Akasucky, but I've heard some bad reviews about this place from family and friends. Regardless, you gotta be consistent with that stuff or it'll make people like me never want to come here again. I never want to come here again.

I went here with my girl to eat a quick bite. We thought we were gonna eat somewhere else for a full meal later, but we didn't. I should've ordered more here. Anyways, Taco Factory in Walnut used to be located somewhere else-- but in the same plaza. Now it's a lot bigger and nicer than the old spot. It's located on the corner of La Puente and Lemon in the same plaza as Vons and Blockbuster.

bigger and nicer than before

All we got was one mahi mahi burrito ($5.73). It comes unwrapped so you can put your sauces and stuff in there from the salsa bar. Then you ask them to wrap it for you when you're all done. The burrito was decent sized, although I don't think it was humongous. I shoulda put my hand next to it in the picture for a comparison. Anyways, the burrito was good. Fresh-tasting.

boring picture of a burrito

I would go here again another time. It's just that there's so many Mexican restaurants around, I have to be in the area to come back here. The spot for me right now is still Osuna's with their lobster burritos.

Colima Burger - Walnut

Colima Burger

I went to this place cuz my friend was craving some burgers. It's like your typical local burger joint like Nogales Burger, but cleaner looking. I got a fish sandwich ($4.19). I think that costs way too much. The sandwich wasn't huge and it wasn't that great. I finished it though, cuz you better be a pretty horrible fish sandwich for me not to finish. We also got fries ($1.50) cuz I knew I wasn't gonna get full from my sandwich. I don't know why, but I just don't like steak fries much. You know the fat fries they always serve at these burger joints.

fish sandwich. needs more fish. needs more everything.

My friend got the Colima Burger Special which cost about $5. I think it came with jalapenos or some kind of peppers or chili. He said it was good, but as he was nearing his last bites, he couldn't stand too much of it anymore. He also said it was super greasy, but he's always like that. If I ate it, I probably wouldn't have thought so. There's people who always complain about the grease, and there's people who just don't notice or don't give a s#!t. He's the former, I'm the latter.

Colima Burger Special

For me, nothing special about the place. For people who eat meat, maybe it'll fulfill your greasy burger cravings.

Osuna's is located in the same plaza as Albertson's on the corner of Nogales and Amar. I've been here a few times, but it's always been to-go. The prices are a little high, so I don't come here too often. The only things I've tasted from here are the garlic fish, shrimp burrito, and lobster burrito. All the items you get to-go come with beans, some salad, and a small bag of chips and some salsa.

The filet of fish in garlic sauce seemed really plain to me. It cost about $10.85 plus tax. My girlfriend thought the same as well. I don't know why, but every time we order fish in garlic sauce at different places, it comes out really bland. We probably won't order those anymore unless it's restaurant's special dish they're known for.

filet of fish in garlic sauce... never again.

Then we come to the lobster burrito. I know that $8.25 is a lot to pay for a burrito. But this isn't a regular taco stand or Taco Bell burrito. You can't eat this burrito with just your hands and expect it to keep it's shape. This thing's stuffed full of small lobster tails. I mean almost every bite you're gonna get a piece of lobster. I hate it when restaurants get all shiesty with their ingredients. Osuna's hooks it up in this dish. Their shrimp burritos are similar too. But I'll always come back for the lobster burritos here.

gotta try their lobster burritos

I saw Krazy Noodle Thai after eating at Sake Sushi in Walnut. It's a new place located in the same plaza as Sake Sushi near Stater Bros., Burger King, and the Chevron gas station. I ordered the crab fried rice as usual. I liked it, so I would definitely order it again.

Crab Fried Rice

My friend ordered the pad see ew. He wasn't really happy with his. I don't think he'll be going here again.

pad see ew

My other friend ordered the South Sea fried rice I think. I don't remember if he liked it or not. All I know is that I liked the fried rice, so I wouldn't mind coming here again. The prices are okay, and you can go to Baskin Robbins next door for dessert-- if you're still hungry.

South Sea fried rice?

Get directions

Sake Sushi, formerly known as Jun Sushi is located near Mt. San Antonio College in the same plaza as Stater Bros. and Baskin Robbins and other little shops around the area. This place just recently reopened with the new name, but I used to hit up Jun Sushi before somewhat regularly.

When I went to Sake to see what was new, I didn't really notice any drastic changes. The prices are still similar to Jun's prices. This place is on the cheaper side of the sushi spectrum, but it's no value meal. The food was pretty much the same. Depending on how picky you are with sushi/rolls, you might not like this place. I'd be willing to go here once in awhile, but it won't be like, "Oh. Let's go to Sake Sushi!!!!" Go here if you're nearby and are lazy to drive too far... or if you're willing to spend a little more, head over to Naked Fish in the adjacent plaza.

Crunchy Rolls I think...

Salmon Skin Roll I believe....

Dynamite for sure....

The hell is this?

I go to sushi restaurants for their baked/special rolls. I'm not into the raw stuff too much. Jubei has little or no special rolls that I could remember.
The best thing for me was the salmon teriyaki. I usually order that when a) I'm too broke to buy 4 different rolls, or b) They don't have any rolls that I would want to order. In this case, it was b. Their dynamite was okay but not the greatest for sure. Mimi said the sushi that they're supposedly known for didn't taste that great. They put a dab of wasabi in between the sushi and the rice. She said she thinks they do that when they want to hide the taste of the sushi.

Jubei wasn't super expensive, but it wasn't on the cheaper side of the sushi restaurant spectrum either. I surely don't wanna go here again. If you like raw sushi, you might still want to check it out cuz I've read everybody else's reviews and they loved it. Maybe it was because we got there an hour before closing that the sushi wasn't great. Oh well. Moving on.....
